SUMMARY:OSCU Open Science Event: Global Perspectives and Experiences on Ope
 n Science: Focus on Africa
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nHosted by: Bianca Kramer\, Jeroen Bosman\, Mary Felix-M
aina (OSCU members\, Utrecht University Library) and Joost de Laat(OSCU me
mber\, UGlobe)\, in collaboration with the UU Center for Global Challenges
\n\n\n\nMany UU researchers are engaged in collaborative research around t
he world. Similarly\, researchers from around the world have established p
rojects in UU in effort to improve the world together. Open Science is tod
ay widely recognized as playing a crucial role in the continuing global re
search\, especially also around the Covid-19 pandemic. The importance of g
lobal collaboration is also reflected in Utrecht University's Strategic Pl
an 2025. It therefore goes without saying that the promises of open scienc
e go beyond our geographical space. What role is Open Science playing in i
nternational collaboration? Are there experiences from researchers and kno
wledge experts across regions that may be valuable for us in enriching the
Open Science journey in UU? How can we implement Open Science so that it
benefits not only UU researchers\, but researchers and society across the
globe?\n\n\n\n\nIn this session we will engage the Open Science Community
Utrecht with the aim to create more awareness of the opportunities and cha
llenges facing researchers in Africa to engage in Open Science and reflect
on how Utrecht University can implement Open Science so that it indeed tr
uly benefits not only UU researchers\, but researchers and society across
the globe.\n\n\n\n\nThe conversations will focus on diverse issues on glob
al Open Science picked up from previous sessions held at Utrecht Universit
y\, including but not limited to equity of open access\, who benefits from
open data\, implications for local practice\, participation in research a
nd research priority setting.  We will talk to Open Science experts and o
ther researchers from several countries in Africa and UU researchers invol
ved in projects in Africa.\nThere are three panelists/speakers:\n\n\n\n J
oy Owango\, from Kenya. Joy is on the board of advisors at AfricArxiv –
The free preprint service for African scientists\; Joy is also founding di
rector TCC Africa-Training Centre in Communication.\n Teg-Wende Idriss Ti
nto\, from Burkina Faso. Teg-Wende is ambassador of the Open Knowledge net
work Burkina Faso and open activist living in Ouagadougou.\n Thomas Herv
é Mboa Nkoudou\, from Cameroon. Thomas is a postdoctoral researcher curre
ntly at Université d'Ottawa\; Thomas is also at The Open Bioeconomy Lab a
nd founder of the Mboalab. Thomas's research interest are scholarly commun
ication\, digital humanities\, open science and postcolonial studies\n\n\n
